Scalp Microneedling Preparation & Aftercare

Scalp microneedling creates controlled micro-channels to stimulate follicle activity and improve delivery of growth factors. It may be performed alone or with PRP or PRFM. A topical anesthetic is used for comfort. Mild scalp tenderness, redness, or pinpoint bleeding is normal for 1–2 days. Because hair grows in cycles, results build over 3–6 months with a series of sessions.

Scalp microneedling may not be suitable if you:

Are pregnant or nursing

Have active scalp infection, folliculitis, or open sores

Have an inflamed or flaring scalp condition

Have history of keloid scarring

Have bleeding disorder or on anticoagulation

Are immunosuppressed

Took isotretinoin within past 6 months

Have scarring hair loss (may require different care)

Pre-Treatment

Day of Appointment

Arrive with clean, dry hair
No hairspray, gel, oils, or dry shampoo
Skip topical minoxidil that morning

1–2 Weeks Prior

Schedule color/chemical services before, not after
Tell us about all hair loss medications

72 Hours Prior

Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners (if safe)
Don't stop Rx meds without consulting physician

Post-Treatment

First 24 Hours

Leave scalp alone — no washing or products
No hats, helmets, or tight headwear
Sleep on a clean pillowcase

After 24 Hours

Wash gently with lukewarm water, mild shampoo
Pat dry — no vigorous towel rubbing
Resume topicals only when we advise

Avoid

xExercise and heavy sweating for 48 hours
xSwimming pools, saunas, steam for 48 hours
xColor, bleach, relaxers for 2 weeks
xDirect sun on scalp; use a loose hat after 24hr
xHeat styling and tight ponytails for 48 hours

Expected Timeline

Day 0

Redness, tenderness, possible pinpoint bleeding

Day 1

Mild tenderness; gentle washing OK

Day 2

Redness fading; resume normal routine

3–6 Months

Gradual thickening as hair cycles progress

Call the office if you notice:

Spreading redness or warmth, pus or drainage, increasing pain after day two, or fever. Some shedding early in treatment can be part of the normal hair cycle — but let us know so we can reassure you or adjust your plan.
